In this Preshow Rituals segment, the electro pop artist, LENII, reveals what she does before taking the stage. You can check out the story, after the break.

Before a show, I make sure my day is full of other jobs and things to do so it feels as normal as possible. I’m always less stressed out if I pretend a performance is spontaneous, so I don’t spend much time thinking about what to wear or running over the show in my head. I used to think so much about how I’d come across on stage – what I’d say, how I’d move, I even used to plan my jokes between songs (which I’m sure you could tell!). When I stopped over-preparing I just started feeling way more authentic and relaxed. I think people absolutely value that authenticity over perfection anyway.
On top of that, my one constant ritual is I always have a cup of tea or hot water and honey beforehand. Besides being good for my voice, it calms me down and, wherever I am in the world, I picture just sitting having tea in my kitchen at home (it might be an Irish thing, but literally nothing is more comforting than a cup of tea or someone saying “I’ll put the kettle on”).
Right before I go on stage I like to be down in the crowd chatting to people. It gives me so much energy and makes it feel like when I’m up there I’m just dancing around with friends. Connecting with people is my favourite part.
