1. Whole Foods + Vitamins + Medicinal Teas.
Touring has taught me that food is medicine. We stick to Whole Foods and local co-ops – avoiding any sort of fast food chain like the plague. We also do wellness shots a few times a week (just a dose of ginger, lemon, and cayenne!) and I take lots of vitamins every day. Pre-show, I’ll have a throat coat tea with some honey.
2. Yoga + Meditation.
If anything, tour is a lesson in finding all the strange and small ways you can inhabit your body throughout movement. Yoga is also that same sentiment – honoring and being grateful towards your body in whatever state it might be in that day. I started doing yoga after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder + initially thought that bringing my mat on the road would be a pain. But, we end up getting to the venue early most days and so I just set everything up, energy cleanse the venue with some Palo Santo and do about 30 minutes of flow.
Also, the boys and I have started meditating before shows – sharing 5-10 minutes of complete silence immediately before we go on stage.
3. SELF LOVE + SELF CARE.
Being away in this capacity has taught me to prioritize myself. My favourite forms of self-love while traveling are as follows (and, in no particular order): finding a cat cafe and taking an afternoon alone to be surrounded by perfect felines, getting a massage, walking to a book store, taking a bath (when we stay in AirBNBs), skipping out on a late night hang to sleep (I am the queen of leaving the party early. I just do not care. One bit.), NAPPING, internet buying yourself a nice gift that you’ll come home to when you get back, eating Pho, walking, stretching before bed, finding time to be alone at least once every day, etc.
4. Be present.
It’s difficult to not be constantly looking ahead or backward or counting the days till a certain city or till home. I’ve found walking in whatever city I’m in gives me a connectedness to it that I might feel if I lived there. So, I try and walk for a moment in every city. Reminding myself that I am here, not in tomorrow or in any other place.
5. Little to no alcohol or cigarettes, whoops.
I think the soberest I ever am is on tour. I just like how it feels to feel alive every morning. I also like how my skin looks when I am avoiding these things. Sue me.
