1. Don’t take life too serious. Everything CAN and will go wrong. Stressing over it will make you even crazier than the road can make you. As long as as you kill it on stage every night, the small things work themselves out.
2. BUDGET FOR YOUR OWN SOUNDMAN! 80% of the “house” or “subbed” engineers have never seen the board they are entrusted to maneuver. And bad sound is the exception to #1. We have learned this lesson, and will never be without our guy Donny Palmer again.
3. Never be too busy for fans. I have never understood the “celebrity” who “doesn’t do pictures” or sign autographs. There are people that never see the folks that are spending their hard earned money so that “YOU” can make a living. We love our fans and friends and look forward to meeting them, talking with them, drinking with them, whatever.
4. EXERCISE!!! On the road you eat like crap, drink 10 times more than you should and sleep hardly ever. You have to make time to take care of your body, or you will not be able to beat it up on stage every night. No one wants a fat rock star. You have to be in shape to be an entertainer, or you might as well just hide behind a music stand. We are no different from athletes… well, except when it comes time for a blood test :)
5. Live and Laugh. Don’t talk about what went right or wrong. Laugh, have fun. Enjoy the people that surround you. Enjoy the places that you visit. HAVE FUN! We are fortunate to be able to do what we love, travel the world, and make people happy in the process. So enjoy yourself, and those you share your life with. No matter what you do!
