My first ever concert memory was when I got to see Swedish artist Robyn playing at Cirkus in Stockholm in 2011. I don’t think this was actually my first concert but it was definitely the first concert where I truly got inspired and saw artistry from a new angle.
2011 was the year after she had released her Body Talk series and with hits like ”Dancing on My Own” and ”Hang with Me” she was one of the most hyped and respected artists at the time. The concert, however, wasn’t a big, over the top, flashy show, she played at a pretty small venue and the whole concert was really intimate and personal. I remember her talking a lot between the songs about her journey as a female in the music industry and how she had to fight with labels over her music and what she thought was good and they didn’t. Instead of giving up she took matters into her own hands and started her own record label where she could release whatever she wanted. It was so inspiring to see a female artist up close that wasn’t just a pretty face and a pretty voice. Robyn was a songwriter, she owned her own record label and if she believed in something she didn’t let anyone tell her twice. She made me want to be not just an artist but a true and honest songwriter, a storyteller and a voice for all the people who aren’t able to speak up for themselves. I hope that one day I can inspire someone the way she inspired me.
Keep up with the artist on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
