Tip #1: Hummus, Hummus, and more Hummus.
It can be kind of difficult to eat healthy while you’re on the road (and when I say kind of, I mean utterly impossible). Hummus is chock-full of nutrients that have multiple health benefits and is perfect for snacking or even enjoying as a meal. When you have to fit into the same costume night after night… hummus is your only best friend.
Best part: Hummus comes in tons of different flavors so it never gets boring, is easy on the wallet when your budget is tight, and can be eaten with essentially anything. (Seriously… anything.)
Tip #2: Run, Walk, Meditate (or just do all three) in the morning.
Yes, sometimes there’s that bar that you absolutely love to go to in Austin, or that club in LA that your buddy has told you about time and time again, and sometimes a good time after a show can leave you feeling less than perky in the morning. No matter what, take the time to get up and run, exercise, and meditate (even if it’s just for 10-20 minutes). You would be surprised the effects being on the road can have on your body and psyche, and you need to keep that money maker (mind, body, & soul) in tip top shape for your fans!
Best part: Exercise and meditation lower your risk for anxiety and depression (especially when you’re away from friends and family for so long), and keeps your stamina up to ensure that you’re giving your fans a kick-ass show night after night.
Tip #3:Always take the time out of your day to reach out to Friends, Family, and Fans.
I like to call my fans my Frans because they’re part fan/part best friend (I mean, come on, who else has your back and supports you like your fans do?!). Being on the road can sometimes become hectic, especially if your tour schedule is as intense as mine is about to be! But never forget to reach out to the people you love, and take a moment out of every day to talk to YOUR Frans online and let them know you appreciate their love and support.
Best part: Your family and friends want to know you’re doing well, and it helps you stay sane when you’ve been gone for so long. And fan engagement is everything, especially online. Take every moment to work your socials and connect. That’s what makes the difference between fans, and fans for life.
Tip #4: Baby Wipes
Unless you’re one of the lucky ones who gets to stay in a hotel after every show, showers are not always easily accessible. Even when you do get to stay in hotels, sometimes your schedule doesn’t allow you to clean up before a show. Baby wipes are the only way to stay fresh (or as fresh as possible) while you’re on the road.
Best part: You don’t smell like B.O. mixed with a week old bag of Hot Cheetos, especially not when you’re at sound check or hugging your fans after a show. Yikes.
Tip #5: No Matter What (I don’t care how terrible you feel), your fans are your #1 priority.
You will get sick on the road. I don’t care how much hummus you eat, or how clean you are after those baby wipes, getting sick on the road happens to everyone. Sometimes life even takes a turn and something happens in your personal life. Remember that your fans have nothing to do with either of those things, so suck it up and give them everything you’ve got. You’d be surprised how good you feel after giving your best to a room full of people who want to be there for you.
Best part: Your fans are the reason you get to live your dream, so hug them, learn their names, and make them feel like they’re the most important people in the room. Because they are.
