The first ritual that I perform when I have a gig is eating a big meal about an hour or two before I begin & keeping myself hydrated throughout the day. By having my cells replenished with food & water, I feel prepared to take on anything!
Second, I love to mingle before & after each show. By familiarizing myself with the crowd before I perform, I may be able to relate my songs during the show to a new acquaintance that I made in the audience. It is my goal to connect us all as human beings, not only through music but through conversation & one on one interaction. By getting to know the people in the room, I can make my lyrics & mood more applicable & palpable to the concert attendees.
I can take this socializing a step further by listening to the bands that perform on the same bill as me & my band that night. By speaking with & listening to other artists’ music, I become moved & inspired once again. It is an amazing thing to work in an industry that has the ability to instill inspiration each day on the job.
Lastly, in order to truly prepare myself for the show, my most important ritual is to breathe & meditate. I think about every step that has taken me to this precise moment. It may be cliché, but clichés are clichés for a reason! I relax & think about the hard work & preparation that has culminated to this beautiful point. I set my intentions for the event & envision myself positively changing the world one lyric at a time.
