On our last string of UK dates we were due to play in sunny Basingstoke. The promoters had agreed to sort our hotel for the evening and everything in the world seemed fine.
On our way south, we stopped at a service station for our usual (a kick-about in the HGV parking area and a Costa flat white) when we got an email explaining that a hotel hadn’t in fact been booked and that we would be staying at one of the support acts’ houses instead. Despite this being slightly inconvenient, we were all grateful to have a place to crash and played the show in high spirits -except Rob who is a miserable shit sometimes.
After the show everyone stayed out for drinks, whilst Rob and our manager headed back to the empty house. Address in hand, they had been assured that the back door at number 32 had been left open for them to get in. Upon arrival, the side gate was locked so Rob climbed the fence to open the back door. After a minute of rattling the handle, it dawned on him: there he was, inadvertently trying to break into the wrong house in suburban Basingstoke, the worst burglar in the world, a vision of panic in a pastel shirt.
After a quick scramble back over the fence and a few hours in the van hunched over a couple of warm tins of cheap Polish lager, too scared to try any other doors, they watched everybody else arrive and stroll without a care in the world into number 34.
‘The Wrong House’ is a tour story brought to you by Marsicans and is in no way affiliated with Wallace & Gromit’s ‘The Wrong Trousers’.
