We had the privilege to play the Troubadour in LA with Never Shout and Hayley Kiyoko, and it was a crazy, sold out show. The energy in the room was great and we put on a good show and had a wonderful time. After the show, I had a couple of drinks and I was talking to a few people upstairs between sets and I saw this guy wearing a Raiders hat sitting at the bar alone.
Since I was feeling pretty good about myself, confidence soaring from what was truly one of the iconic performances of the modern era, I felt that I had somehow earned the right as a Chiefs fan to go rib this Raiders fan about the abysmal state of his team.
“That’s quite a year you guys are having,” I quipped.
He just looked at me puzzled, thinking there was no way I could be referring to the team whose apparel he was adorning, who had only manage 3 or 4 wins that year.
“The Raiders…”
“Oh,” he was smiling now, “what are you? A Chargers fan?”
“Chiefs”
“Wow, even worse.”
He shook my hand and said I had played a good set and that my band had a nice sound. I said thanks, and for the rest of the conversation that was sort of about LA, music, and how tough our division was going to be in the coming season, I always found a way to get back to making fun of the Raiders. I think it was that second drink that had tipped the scales from “mostly cordial” to “playfully ribbing.” We both enjoyed our drinks and our conversation, and then he said he was going to catch NSN’s set before he headed out. I said it was nice talking to him and I started heading back to the green room when NSN’s tour manager stopped me.
He said, “what did you guys talk about?”
“Who?” I replied, puzzled.
I still don’t remember what name he said or exactly what the guy’s title was.
“Vice President… Warner Bros… artist development…” he had said in some fashion.
You get the picture.
I never saw that guy again, and he certainly never saw my band again, but at least it makes for a good story..
Keep up with the band on Facebook!
