In thinking about The MERCER Dream Tour- I reflected on growing up and the fantastic opportunities I had to see several female artists that spanned many generations and genres of music. These shows included everyone from rock icons to iconic singer-songwriters and performers- from Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Nora Jones, Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Tate McRae to a 150-capacity venue featuring a relatively unknown Billie Eilish. These performers’ concert experiences aligned with their brands; for example, I recall Katy Perry had blown up fruit on stage at the Fillmore (she even held my hand pre-show as we skipped together to her merch table). Adele had a stripped-down backdrop so that the audience only focused on her vocals. At the same time, Nora Jones was center stage sitting at the piano.
Drawing on those experiences and music I listened to growing up, I would have to put Amy Winehouse and Tate McRae on the ticket. Amy was a constant for me starting with my rides to pre-school- she has stuck with me all these years; in fact, during my first live show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC, I covered Black to Black. Amy’s vocal styling captivated audiences and made her sets feel like intimate sessions. I would love to duet with her.
I would also invite Tate Mcrae, who has been a songwriting inspiration since she first blew up on YouTube with “One Day” in 2017. Her ability to connect with her audience through songwriting and deliver high-energy performances makes for an exceptional fan experience. The final piece would be a guest performance by Dolly Parton, one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I leverage Dolly’s narrative songwriting technique and the ability to draw inspiration from the people and places around me to create a story arch in my music. She would most definitely sing, “Jolene” and I would accompany her on the piano.
The MERCER Dream Tour is a powerhouse fusion of past and present, tied together by my passion for delivering relatable, uptempo songs that feature complex vocal styling. Imagine if we could collaborate on a single. Now that would be a dream!
