My favorite part of playing music is connecting with others. We meet new people every night and it is always a rewarding experience. It’s also an opportunity to spend time with the band – I’ve played with a lot of the same people over the years and playing is a great excuse to spend time together.
Usually, we get time together traveling to the show – time in the car, at the airport, the hotel or the venue. Everyone has gear to set up and soundcheck for the show but that part of the night is generally laid back and fun. I don’t think there’s a time that someone isn’t cracking a joke.
My favorite pre-show experience is from earlier this year. We played a big hometown show in a theater downtown and we had the venue put out a table for 60 people in the basement. One of my favorite taco shops in town put together a family style dinner for the group. We had the band, crew and fans sit down to dinner before we headed upstairs to play. Eating together is important.
That’s a night I’ll always remember.
