Micky James – PRESHOW RITUALS

In this Preshow Rituals segment, the alternative artist, Micky James, shares what he does before every show. You can check out his rituals, after the break.

The “Pre show ritual” has become one of my favorite parts about performing and touring. Its the one and only part of my day that I feel the most clarity and the most myself, in a way. That moment before you go on is just as much of a rush as being on the stage. It’s a special moment that makes it all worth it. It’s part of the reason I love performing so much.
Thirty minutes before every show, my routine starts out with usually stretching for about five-ten minutes. As a performer who presents a lot of energy and charisma, it is important to be conditioned. I treat every show like its an arena gig. I give it my all and put it all out on the line. So, to prepare yourself for that state of mind it’s important to take care of yourself so you have the ability to put on a memorable performance. After stretching I do a quick vocal warm up. Usually consisting of a few run-throughs of my own songs. The band will put on some music to set a vibe, connect with one another, have a few drinks and get ready to go on. The last few minutes before stage time, I tend to keep to myself, pacing around – getting into a head space and living in that moment before going on. Its natural for performers to get the overdose of adrenaline and for the mind to be racing forward, so it’s important to center yourself, connect yourself to the environment giving yourself the confidence to put on a great show.
