This is tough. Although I’d kill to open up for a legend like Prince or Stevie, I think I’d I have to go straight neo-soul on ’em. While the other kids worked out their teenage angst to the tune of Bush, Blink, and whatever other form shoe-gazing, emo-rock that was happening at the time, I was into listening to Musiq, Maxwell, D’Angelo, and The Roots. That whole genre undoubtedly helps shape my sound and I borrow from it constantly. My dream tour would be like stepping into a time machine that took you back to Philly in 2002. I picked three.
Musiq –
I went to a performing arts high school and one of the vocal kids made me a mixtape CD with a song called “Love” on it. That was it for me. His second album literally had like ten or twelve potential singles on it. He’s one hell of a songwriter and he opened my ears to the genre.
D’Angelo –
He’s my savior. I’ve never had a greater appreciation for another artist like I have for this man. Voodoo is a masterpiece. It’s such a vast expanse of a record that no matter how many times you spin it, you can always find something new. I’d be in the front row crying and screaming. If I was a 13-year-old girl he’d be my Justin Bieber.
Erykah Badu –
Sorry ‘Yonce, but Erykah will always be queen to me.
