Mr Gabriel – FIRST CONCERT EVER

I don’t know if it was my first..But honestly, I remember it more for my parent’s reaction than the music. Randy Newman at the Biltmore estate. My dad was and is a huge fan, my mom not so much. My dad did a wonderful job of indoctrinating me with artists that have defined me as an artist and creator to this day; Jim Croce, Huey Lewis, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beach Boys, Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman. My mom wanted me to make church music, still does. Seems unlikely but anything is possible. It 2018!

Anyway… We stayed for an hr or so… I love LA, You Got A Friend in Me, Short People, Drop the Big One. If you cant tell from his songs he has a fantastic sense of humor that is polarizing but honest and transparent. He hates everything but loves singing about it. It’s unreal. He’s universal. I will never understand where he finds the confidence to say the things he does. Crazy. Inspiring. My mom was livid. He said “Fuck” every other word and to her, he might as well have been the anti-christ. But he is who he is.

We didn’t finish the show. Left early due to the inappropriate nature of his performance. Just as an FYI, my mom made me leave Titanic during the Diamond nude-y scene, so this wasn’t exactly unusual. But despite every effort of my mom to protect me, Mr. Newman was a blaring horn in the night. I am indebted to his freedom. I’ve found mine in the same way. Real, Honest, “give em whatever you want till they figure out what they need” mentality. Maybe it was good timing or I just happened to be in a vulnerable state, but I’m a victim of the greatness of Randy Newman. “Strange things are happening to me, there ain’t no doubt about it”
