I have been at the receiving end of lot’s of pranks over the years & have dished them out too. The usual pranks were cellophane over the toilet seat. I use to leave the tall ashtrays with sand in tilted against band members hotel rooms. Knock on the door & run off giggling. Sadly they have all gone now. I got many hours of joy doing this but there were always consequences.
Back in the late 80s, I was touring Scotland playing guitar for Alison Moyet. Everyone was in the bar after the show and, after a while, I noticed that most of the band had left. They eventually came back laughing, someone was dangling my room key in front my face. I snatched it quickly & ran to my hotel room. I opened the door to find all of the contents of the room gone. Bed, chairs, tables, suitcase…. gone. It was completely empty. I tried to open the door to the bathroom but couldn’t because my bed was behind the door, as you can imagine I was swearing & shouting loudly.
There was a very loud knock on the door. It was a small man from the next room wearing a dressing gown. He was very angry & said he hadn’t been to sleep because of the party going on in my room! I tried to explain but he had already called the hotel manager who had just arrived. He took one look into my room & said ‘Where is all the furniture, sir?’ I told him it was ok & that everything was just in the bathroom. ‘What’s it all doing in the bathroom sir?’ I explained but this just made him angrier. They eventually left. It took quite some time to get everything out of the bathroom. It was around 2 am. The next morning I was told never to book a room there again!
