After coming to terms that I’m not burning alive in an airplane cabin (I’m incredibly afraid of flying), I do vocal warm ups for about an hour, tune my guitar, and make sure I can still play the 4 chords that make up pretty much every one of my songs. When I get to the venue, I usually stare down the headlining acts sound engineer as he assumes I’m just some local kid who somehow got through the double doors and into the venue. After having my last name mispronounced 15 times I eventually make it to the green room.
Once I’m in the room, I move onto the snacks set up on the table near the couch. I usually go for the snickers bar first. Of course, there’s always that ten second period of shame where I internally try to convince myself to go for the vegetable platter instead, but it’s usually a losing effort. I sit down for 20 minutes in visible discomfort after pretty much swallowing the snickers bar whole. Not at all satisfied. Then I usually go and open four or five wrong doors before making it to the bathroom, and use my shirt to cover my hands so I don’t have to make skin contact while flushing the toilet.
Right before going on stage, I drink a whole bottle of water and spill all over my black jeans so the whole crowd will think I pissed myself. I’m ready to play.
