1. STAY HYDRATED
I know it’s long having to stop for a pee break every hour but staying hydrated throughout the day is key to keeping healthy on tour!
2. AVOID JUNK FOOD
Avoid the urge to binge on junk food at service stations… when we’re on the road we have the habit of binging out on chocolate, croissants, and chips on the first few days, which always results in feeling bloated and lethargic… we’ve learnt the hard way to eat more healthy and take free food and water whenever you can…off the rider, from the hotels, where ever… you never know when you’re next gonna eat on the long open road and it saves some cash.
3. BRING CHANGE OF CLOTHES AND UNDERWEAR
If your set is anything like ours, we come off the stage after an hour of relentless headbanging, jumping and bellowing with our clothes left soaking wet to the bone! Once we forgot our change of clothes at the hotel and had a very uncomfortable walk back, waddling like two wet penguins… soggy bums is not the one!
4. BRING SOMETHING THAT REMINDS YOU OF HOME
Being on the road can be very tiresome and uncomfortable at times as there’s a lot of waiting around, sitting in one spot in a van for hours and hopscotching from hotel to hotel each night… Bring something that’s familiar and comfortable! We like to bring blankets, dressing gowns and our own pillows as some hotels have pillows that are hard as fuck and the sheets are paper thin… also your own shower gel and toothpaste, no one wants to share a hotel room with a smelly bandmate! Hair essentials and black hair products are hard to come by on the road, If you want a healthy afro… stock up on them hair oils and creams!
5. BRING A MEDICAL KIT
You never know when you’ll need a sashay of Lemsip or emergency day and night nurse.
Our medical kit consists of:
*Plasters – for sore drummer hands
*Sudocrem – for junk food fueled spots
*Steamer – for groggy tired vocals
*Vocal Zone – comes in handy on long tours
*Ginger & Honey – Put it on your rider
*Gaviscon – Our eating pattern is all over the place
*Pain Killers.
*Tampons
6. GETTING IN THE ZONE
Before a show warming up is essential if you want to stand the test of time, especially on the longer tours.
We generally stretch, jump up and down, do vocal warm-ups and do a load of shouting to hype ourselves up to get in the zone. We also do a secret handshake, it has come to the point where it would be unlucky if we didn’t do it.
Most of all, remember to have fun and slay every show, It doesn’t matter if you are performing to 10 people or 10,000 people, every person counts, and every gig means that you are doing something you love.
