The Roots would be the opener. The grooves, the rhymes, the swagger. There’s nothing better than live hip-hop played by a devastatingly tight rhythm section. We’ve learned so much as a band watching and listening to them. And obviously, Jimmy Fallon would sprint onstage immediately after they concluded their set, shouting “We’ve got a great show lined up for you tonight…!”
Bon Iver would follow. One of the true musical geniuses out there. The songwriting is gorgeous, the instrumentalists are clinical, and the way the mix comes together is powerful and ethereal. They do great visual work as well.
Next, one of our favorites. Mutemath is the best live band we’ve seen. The energy they generate is unbelievable. On countless occasions, we’ve seen them take a room where virtually no one knows them, and transform the everyone in attendance into rabid fans. They have a way of mesmerizing the audience with their onstage spirit. If there’s any indication of their zest and enthusiasm onstage, it’s this; the drummer duct-tapes a pair of studio headphones to his head so they don’t fall off.
No show would be complete without a bit of raunchy comedy. Louis CK would take the stage for 5 minutes, showering the crowd with his best and dirtiest jokes. He’d finish his set, then give us a two-minute aggressive pep talk as we made our way onto the stage.
On Division would close out the show. We’d give everything we had. We’d play the tunes we love for you. We’d thank you for being there to support us. We’d make you think. We’d make you laugh. Most of all, we’d let you know we’re all in this together.
