Pageant Boys – DREAM TOUR

I have a recurring dream in which I’m trapped in a labyrinthine church. I’m usually being chased. The halls fold upon themselves and doors melt as I pass through them. So, fittingly, my dream tour would be in gothic cathedrals. Every performance would begin at dusk as light begins to pour through the rose window and after the sun sets, spotlights are lowered from cranes outside the church and illuminate the stained glass. High along the ceilings, there are clouds. Lightning passes between them and intermittently, as necessitated, they open up and begin to drizzle.

After the performance, candles are lit and the audience summons the spirit of Julius Eastman. Resurrected, he walks into the cathedral followed by the spectral light of the stained glass. He sits at the piano and plays for hours and hours without pause. As morning comes, his body begins to fade but the piano keeps playing.

The tour would never end. After we had played all of the cathedrals, we would perform at basilicas and chapels, mosques, monasteries, synagogues, temples, pagodas, shrines and any place holy. And when we die, we’ll be resurrected; the tour goes on, the piano keeps playing and I never stop singing.
