Once upon a time, my keyboardist Will and I found ourselves opening up for Matthew Good on his solo acoustic tour. The entire thing was a pleasure. It also took place in mainly western Canada in the dead of winter.
When we arrived in BC we had decided to rent a van – but the salesperson at Enterprise sweet-talked the guys into taking a compact Mercedes instead for the same price (which did not fit any of our gear). We rode for weeks in the tiny cramped but sporty automobile, driving ourselves through the mountains. On one morning, I remember Will turning to me and saying, “nothing interesting has happened to us in a few days – I wonder what you’re going to talk about on stage tonight”. That day we were meant to drive from BC to Calgary through Crowsnest Pass (which, if you haven’t driven it, is a horrible drive to make through the winter, especially in a tiny car with tons of safety features).
Somewhere along the highway, the snow-system (??? I don’t know anything about cars I’m sorry haha) kicked in and we couldn’t get it to go above 40km/hr. So we were literally crawling along the Rocky Mountains in the middle of a zero-visibility snow storm. I think at one point we pulled over to stop for nachos at midnight at this tiny pub in the middle of the mountains. By the time we finally made it into Calgary it was well past 1am (we had left at 9am) and we walked up to get into our Air-B &B. We couldn’t get the key to work for some reason and a neighbor in the building saw us fiddling with the locks.
Before we knew it, not one, not two, but FOUR police cars showed up and questioned us at length about why we seemed to be breaking into the building. Eventually, my tour manager smoothed it out and they looked up my Instagram to verify it all, and we FINALLY got in around 2am. And that is the story of how it took us 17 hours to drive from BC to Alberta and we nearly got arrested for trespassing. At least I had a story to tell on stage that night :)
