We went out on tour in early 2024, and our first stop was Toronto. That’s a fair distance from Southern California, and we drove pretty relentlessly for a couple of days. So when we got to the Canadian border, we were already pretty tired, but we had been assured that the crossing should be simple. It turned out to be anything but. The promised “minutes-long” security check turned into a multi-hour fiasco. We were directed from the car line to a parking lot, directed out of the van (which was then completely emptied of all our gear) into a building, directed to another line of cars, and escorted by police to another building offsite. Finally, we met someone who confusedly exclaimed that we were all set, and that the previous 137 people we had spoken to hadn’t reviewed our documents properly. It was a trial unfit for mortal man. I remember sitting in one of those rooms in a state of quiet acquiescence, already wording a sincere apology to our Canadian fans that we, captured in a labyrinth of bureaucracy, would not be playing for them the following day and indeed would perhaps never play again. We were, I decided, doomed to wander the car lots and white halls for eternity.

The stale taste in our mouths was soon replaced by pure bliss, however, when we stopped at a Tim Horton’s. It was an insane day, but by George, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
