Andrew Braun, of the indie electro-pop duo, Rococode, is currently on tour across North America right now, in support of their latest full-length album, Don’t Worry It Will Be Dark Soon. While he’s out on this tour, Andrew will be tasting and rating veggie burgers along the way. You can check out his first installment, after the break.
It’s not always easy to eat vegetarian when you’re inhabiting a steady stream of moving vehicles, dive bars, night clubs and hotel rooms. I refuse to order salads in restaurants and most often that leads to eating veggie burgers probably 5 times a week. Anything goes in veggie burger land, and I’m going to keep you posted on the best and worst offerings I encounter over the next 4 weeks. Follow along as I brave Cattle Country in Canada, the Midwestern USA and more…
WEEK 1
#1 – HOMETOWN HERO – THE WHIP – VANCOUVER, BC
I’m going to start this column off with a long time favourite, that I ate two out of the last three nights before we left for this tour.
EFFORT: 9/10
The house made patty is a good one. It’s marinated in sweet chile sauce, so it stands out from the crowd a little. It does get pretty crumbly sometimes which is not great if you’re trying to impress someone.
TOPPINGS: 7/10
A little heavy handed with the chipotle mayo for my taste.
SIDES: 9/10
I’m doing my best to stay away from fries so I went with half and half. Great pickle.
FAMILIARITY: 10/10
Like I said… eat this all the time. It’s like home.
#2 – HURRY UP AND WAIT – THE BLUE PLATE – EDMONTON, AB
I ate this in about 30 seconds after a 9 hour drive and before setting up for soundcheck. I’m not sure I really tasted it, but I’ll do my best here. (Sorry, forgot to get a photo.)
EFFORT: 9/10
Solid work on the patty here. Chickpea base, with a dash of curry seasoning.
TOPPINGS: 8/10
Not a huge fan of brie cheese in this situation, but I enjoyed the chutney which complimented the seasoning of the patty quite nicely.
SIDES: 8/10
I ate a salad out of a styrofoam container. Sorry world. I don’t remember tasting it.
RELIABILITY OF REVIEWER: 4/10
#3 – FLASHBACK – COUSINS – WINNIPEG, MB
I’ve eaten at Cousins Deli a few times, but I can’t go near the entrance without flashbacks of a very drunken night when I made a fool of myself at a friend’s wedding and got dropped off there in a deplorable state.
EFFORT: 6/10
The patty was fine here, if a bit on the dry side. The real failure here was in the stale and dry bun. The moisture of the whole enterprise seemed to get gradually evaporate as I ate.
TOPPINGS: 8/10
Some nice flavors here with more chutney and some banana peppers.
SIDES: 6/10
Greek salad with lettuce is always a bit of a downer. I’m also deducting points for the sticker.
REGRET: 10/10
I don’t regret this burger… only the memories that are conjured.
