Roxy Roca – DREAM TOUR

James Brown and The Famous Flames would be the ultimate act to tour with. To watch James do his thing night after night would be incredibly inspiring and a little like going to school each night. No one since that time has taken their showmanship to that level. My all-time favorite concert footage is their 1967 concert at The Olympia in Paris. I pick the Famous Flames era because during that time the band was mixing in so many styles of music; soul, blues, doo-wap, jazz, and even a little rock and roll. I can still remember trying to emulate James in my grandparents car port in Alabama. The concrete was super smooth and in your church penny loafers you could really move!

Little Richard has one of the most iconic voices in the history of popular music. Touring with him would also satisfy my rock and roll side while still perfectly fitting into the line-up. Richard’s passion comes through in all of his recordings, which is not always easy to do. I have always dreamed of laying down a vocal track that had the sound of “Long Tall Sally” or “Tutti Frutti,” so raw and gritty. If he inspired James Brown to leave gospel and let it all hang out I can’t imagine the kind of effect his personality and performance would have on us.

Dyke and the Blazers had a super raw, funky sound that would get any place moving and grooving. When you listen to those old DATB recordings they paint a picture of a party you just would kill to attend. Rodney Brown has one of my absolute favorite drum sounds and when the band starts to improvise you never know where it is gonna go. We have covered “Let A Woman Be A Woman, Let A Man Be A Man” at shows many times, and that tune always seems to put folks into a dance frenzy.

We would want to run this tour all summer long, it would be sweaty and nasty! We could call it something like “The Super Summer Soul Supremacy.” I can’t even imagine how inspired ROXY ROCA would be opening this tour up. It would be a dream come true without a doubt.
