These kind of questions keep me up at night, so ill try and be brief.
Paul McCartney
He was my first musical love, other than NSYNC. Paul is the embodiment of a musical genius. He makes it look easy performing 40 songs a night at 74 and gives me someone to look up to in a way that nobody could ever be. In my ideal world, he would let me sing “My Love” with him and then roll into “Helter Skelter.” The finale would be him reincarnating George Harrison to sing “Something.” I would die, life complete.
The National
When I first heard The National, I tried so hard to hate it. It didn’t take long for them to change my life. As a guy that doesn’t have a particularly high or rangy voice, Matt Berninger was my godsend. It’s not a coincidence that at very particular times of heartbreak in my life, the National was on repeat. Who doesn’t want to get drunk and scream THIS IS THE LAST TIME!
THE JAPANESE HOUSE
When Amber Bain broke onto the scene a few years ago, she changed electronic music for me. It’s always felt unintentional and unemotional, but the way she crafts her music is refreshing. When I started making electronic music, I always felt the void of the guitar, but she has reinvigorated the use of guitar in music. She knows how to strike a deep emotion within. I really love how she recreates the music live with a three piece. Relying heavily on tracks, there is still some sense of honesty and magic in the way the band constructs the music. This is a band that I want my kids to listen to one day.
Drake
People give him a lot of shit for being the “sensitive” rapper who sings about girls and lost love, but nobody can deny that Drake has a gift. “Take Care” is still my favorite album of all time. He can grab your heart, make you question why you gave it, and then allow you to say “I found someone better.” I may sound crazy, but he is a generational talent. In my dream, Drake would invite me up to rap “HYFR.”
