We have only ONE pre-show ritual. We adopted it from Tokyo Police Club, who apparently adopted it from Passion Pit, who apparently adopted it from…The Deftones? I think?? The history gets a bit foggy the further you go back. A big game of pre-show-ritual telephone, I suppose….
Anyways, it’s called the Cinnamon Roll. It’s basically a “Hip hip hooray” or “Goooo Bayside”-style hands-in cheer. Everyone in the band gathers in a circle, puts their right hand in the middle with fingertips touching (photo below), then rolls their hands counter-clockwise thus creating the cinnamon roll. As the roll tightens, everyone puts their left hand on top, shouts “Cinnamonnnnnnnnn ROLL!” and releases the roll upwards. Then we hit the stage. We’ve been doing this since about 2012 and I don’t think we’ve played a show without the Cinnamon Roll since then.
