Sandra Lynn – PRESHOW RITUALS

In this Preshow Rituals segment, the country music artist, Sandra Lynn, shares what she does before every show. You can check out her rituals, after the break.

Before a show, I always say a little prayer thanking God for the opportunity to be able to do what I love for a living and also to have a great show. Every single show is different–there are lots of components involved when putting on a show–sound, lights, crowd, instruments, etc.–so saying a little prayer that it all goes well and smoothly always helps me feel at ease before taking the stage.

Sometimes when I’ve been out on the road singing a lot I take certain precautions and coat my vocal chords to keep them from damage and overuse. A couple things that I find that help with this is drinking hot water and lemon, taking a spoonful of honey or eating a small bag of Lays potato chips before a show.

Another process that’s crucial to keeping my vocal chords healthy and gets me revved up before a show is doing vocal warm-ups. This is a ritual I learned from the first vocal coach I ever had when I was seven years old and have continued the practice ever since. This is important for helping my voice to hit difference ranges while singing and also helps prevent vocal strain.

When we’re out on the road, sometimes we have different set lengths or have recently incorporated new songs into our set, so I love talking through the songs and transitions with my band mates. Sometimes things change while you’re on stage performing, but I find it helps us to all have a general idea of what the set is going to be and when instrument changes are happening so we all are on the same page and can enjoy the flow of the show we’re playing!

I definitely make sure to drink lots of water and sometimes take a shot of bourbon to loosen everything up!
