Having the live band expand to a five-piece we now have a wider range of personalities bringing something to the table before we get on stage.
Liz’s usual vocal warm up technique of screaming into a sock is an aggressive reminder that the struggle is real. Flavia, on the other hand, waits at least five minutes before we go on stage to change into her performance clothes as it helps to calm the nerves and gets her in the zone.
My own pre-gig warm up consists of spinning uncontrollably in one place until I feel sick. If I’ve had a few beers I will usually substitute the spinning for something more elegant like humming the Seinfeld theme tune.
Our newest members have little quirks that became more apparent on the last tour we went on too. Rax our bassist will perform a backflip if the show is sold out and Lawrie our drummer performs yoga to thrash metal band Slayer.
It’s a fairly calm affair until we get ready to play but without our little rituals we would not be the same when we need to take the performance to 11.
