Seldom – PRESHOW RITUALS

When we headed out on our first tour, we really didn’t know or appreciate what our schedules would be like and how easily we’d be able to do the things we typically do prior to a show. For instance, when we travel around Texas, we always stop at a gas station chain called Buc-ee’s. It has a bit of everything, including hot food, coffee, all sorts of drinks, shirts, grills, and a bunch of other stuff that are absurd when you think about gas stations – but we’ve never played a show in Texas and not stopped there, nor not taken a picture with the giant bronze beaver statue out front. It’s sort of an unspoken agreement that if it’s on the way, we’re stopping. I think we’ve even planned routes to make sure we get to one.

While on tour, and without our beloved buc-ee’s, we’ve had to adapt. We often don’t have a lot of time between sound check and our set time so everyone tends to spend that time on their own. Typically Carlos (Bassist) goes walking around the area to get a lay of the land, Matt and Sergio (guitarists) use that time to call family and friends, Bryan (drummer) usually goes and rests after having fine-tuned his drums and getting everything setup, and I usually just listen to music to help get me pumped up since I want to bring the energy to our show. While we each do our separate things, though, we always meet up right before we take the stage in sort of a pep circle. It’s a time to remind ourselves to get out of our heads and to just go out and have fun. It’s the one thing that we do prior to every show, no matter how far we travel, and I think it makes all the difference for us.
