I’m someone who takes a while to know what I want to do on a particular evening. The earlier I can get into town the better. I want to try and understand the people in any given region I perform in. A pub for lunch can be a great place to get to know where you are. Talking to strangers is – guess a ritual I do. I don’t know what adults were thinking when they told us, kids, to not talk to strangers.
Once I sound check I tend to be pretty private and withdrawn. I visualize the set going down and maybe make a few adjustments depending on my mood or the political/cultural dynamics.
I do practice transcendental meditation twice a day and I find a meditation between sound check and show really helps focus & energize my performance. Also, sometimes a glass of wines gets me out of my own head.
The whole goal for me is to get on stage and not be thinking.
