I was able to Google the exact date of my first concert (and contact-high), April 21 1996 at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall (now State Farm Center) in Champaign. I would’ve been 12 years old at the time and went with my older sister, Shari, who was a fan of all the bands playing that night. The headliner was Bush, touring their first album 16th Stone, which of course ended up being a somewhat classic album decades later.
Like a lot of kids at the time, I sort of transitioned to metal from grunge and Bush was one of the first bands I really got into. The 2 bands opening for them were Goo Goo Dolls and No Doubt also touring to support their first major-label albums. It was also the tour where Gavin Rossdale met Gwen Stefani and became a couple so there was some random “pop-culture” history in the tour ha.
Back then I was just starting to play guitar so it had a definite creative impact to experience my first big arena concert. I ended up seeing several more concerts there over the years, including Eminem at the peak of his career.
