Pulling up to the packed parking lot of The Wheelhouse in Cedar Falls, IA was not a surprise considering the night’s headliner. After getting into the venue, I got the feeling that the place hadn’t been around long since most of the concert posters hanging on the walls were pretty recent (within the last 6-8 months) and the venue was in almost mint condition. There wasn’t a balcony, but there were plenty of tall stool chairs I was hoping to grab. I was hoping to grab one, but I arrived about 10 minutes too late. Wasn’t a big deal since I was pretty excited to see both the bands playing the show. Also, it is worth mentioning that Sevendust’s main support for the tour, Emphatic, was not playing the date “due to band conflicts”, which is what a tapped piece of paper on the venue’s front door said. Hopefully the concert goers weren’t too disappointed.
After the local opener rocked the stage, Violence To Vegas took the stage. The singer got the crowd pumped up from behind stage while some samples played and the rest of his band took the stage. When the singer hit the stage, he demanded your attention with his over-the-top stage presence (but not in a bad way). After a few songs, the lead singer asked the house to turn off their lights, so the band could use just their own stage lights. With the combination of drum lights, their lights on top of their cabs, and the spotlight on the bottom of the singer’s mic stand, their light show was something to remember especially since they didn’t use any house lights. Overall, the band did a great job of demanding the audience’s attention and I know they gained some fans because after their set, they had quite a few people waiting to buy merchandise.
After a quick set change, everyone in the venue was pumped to see the night’s main event, Sevendust! The band came out to a roaring crowd and that energy didn’t stop cease until they left the stage! The band played a TON of fan favorites, including some of their hit singles including Praise and The Enemy. It is also worth noting that they took advantage of the venue’s lighting and created an amazing light show that I very much enjoyed. The band sounded spot on when comparing them to their recordings and if anyone else thought differently then there must be something wrong with them! Also, the band was selling passes to the unique opportunity for fans to go to an after-show meet and greet with the band. Honestly, they were one of the tightest live bands I have seen in a while and they were a pleasure to watch.
