My first concert ever? Man. I remember my mom taking me to watch street performers and mall concerts when I was still sitting in a stroller. I was obsessed with this group of dudes who sang catchy kids bops – I can’t remember their name, but I would make her take me to all the art walks and festivals they would play at. I was like 4 or 5 years old, but I remember feeling so enamored by the live music. Little kids are walking antennas, it really had an impact on me and I started playing piano right around the same time. But on to the juicy stuff…
The first real high energy concert I ever went to was Warped Tour 1999. I must have been 7 or 8, my uncle was living with my family at the time and he was always blasting good music. He got me so into Blink 182. I remember begging (or demanding?) my mom to let me go with him and his friends to the show. Thankfully she had no idea what it really was. I have the most vivid memory of sitting on my uncle’s shoulders watching Blink and Eminem, singing along to My Name Is. The Pennywise show was the first time I saw a moshpit. I didn’t even really know who Pennywise was, but I was so energized. That day changed my life and even now they’re some of my favorite memories.
