The “She’s A Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas Tour” came rolling through the Chicago suburb of Barrington, IL on Saturday, December 17th for participate in “20 Bands of Christmas”, which is a annual holiday themed music festival featuring 20 awesome bands. Patent Pending was set to play right before the headliner, The Color Morale from Rise Records. The upstairs floor of Penny Road was filled from the barricades right in front of the stage all the way to the other end of the room at the bar. As the guys in Patent Pending were sound checking, lead singer, Joe, sang a Backstreet Boys song as well as Hakuna Matata to get the crowd going.
Once sound checking was over and they were about to play, the crowd went crazy. You could feel the energy in the room building. During the first song, “Walk-in Closet”, Joe took a dive into the crowd, safely falling into the hands of his fans. The next song, “Anti Everything” was probably my favorite of the night. Joe, Josh, Rob, Marc and Travis created a synchronized dance routine to go along with the song. That was probably the most amazing, and hilarious thing I’ve seen to this date. I also remember Rob saying “think about what Justin Bieber is going to do with all that money!” during that song. They continued on with eight more songs, including a cover of “My Own Worst Enemy” by LIT, and their Christmas song entitled “She’s A Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas.” During another one of their songs called “Shake Weights and Moving Crates,” Davey Fortner of Freshman 15 jumped on stage to do some guest vocals.
Patent Pending is one of the most real bands I have ever met. They’re full of energy, and look genuinely happy. They showed their love and appreciation to not only their fans, but the bands that played before them. In between every song, Joe said things that made the audience feel so appreciated and loved. Band guys like them are hard to find nowadays. He told the audience to never give up on whatever they’re doing and that he hasn’t given up because of his fans. I got the chance to chat with him after their set and he really is the sweetest guy I’ve ever met. He was so thankful that I had talked to him and he hugged me three times before I stepped away. I loved every second of that set and I’m pretty sure that the audience, even the people that didn’t know who Patent Pending was, felt the same as I did.
