Rihanna: She is Rihanna. Her music is versatile and she is proud of who she is an artist and doesn’t try to be anyone but herself. It’s not just her musical style and voice that has made me a huge. It is more so that she has evolved her music as peoples’ tastes evolved. From “Pon de Replay” to “Consideration”, she takes on more than one genre, infuses her own cultural twists super tastefully, and talks about risky topics sometimes (like in Unfaithful and Disturbia). I think observing the way she communicates with fans on social media also tells me a lot about her as a person. There is nothing fake and she an independent woman who makes the time to take charge and be proud of her work while also making time to be with her family.
Eminem: I think if I ever met this man I would just melt. He made me get interested in Hip-Hop and he’s from Michigan (where I grew up!). When I was in high school and trying to deal with being different and sad about weird things, his songs told stories that comforted me and distracted me. I literally used to dedicate hours to trying to understand how he produces tasteful rhythmic phrases by memorizing his songs and his voicing. He is real and has been through a lot and showed me through his music that just writing what you’re going through exactly as your brain processes it is one of the best ways to communicate with people.
Chance the Rapper: He is so charitable and being a resident of Chicago, I feel like I am a part of his journey. I read a lot about what he did to make his dreams come true and love how he puts a Gospel touch in his songs. Chance has just shown the world how will and persistence can do amazing things. Even though our genres are different, I think the fact that we share some connections in terms of the Gospel connection (which is what I listened to learn how to sing) and Chicago background makes me feel like have similar stories to tell and share with the world.
John Legend: So John Legend is a true singer. His voice speaks for itself and he just exudes charisma and sweetness. We overlap because of the R&B interest but are overlap in terms of the vocal focus. He has the kind of talent where he doesn’t need much to shine on stage. It’s just him, a band, and a piano. I respect that since I started out as a singer first and then songwriter second. I also like that the content of his songs is mature and meaningful. I love being a college student and writing about the sorts of feelings young adults experience but I also want to be connected to more mature audiences who are experiencing different phases in their lives.
Keep up with the artist on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
