In this Tour Tips segment, the post-metal band, Siberian, give you their tips for being on tour. You can check out the feature, after the break.
1. GOOD SPIRIT
Being on the road for the first times is probably not as you imagined it would be. At some point, you will meet failure, expectations that might not be met and obstacles along the way. You will need positivity and motivation from all members involved during both travel and shows. Some shows will be better than others, and you will have to accept that. It’s also important to leave space for each other as you’re traveling so close together and hang out almost every minute of every day, that’s why it’s so important to have good chemistry and personalities that work well together in a band.
2. ENTERTAINMENT
When you travel for hours and hours you will need something to do, otherwise, you will definitely get on your band-mates nerves after a while. Sleeping is good to pass the time, but there are some other great options:
– A CD with great “car-driving riffs”
– A phone filled with lots of music and movies and a good pair of headphones
– Books and audiobooks: You can actually use the time in the car to learn something.
3. FOOD AND GOOD HEALTH
We always have plenty of snacks in the car like nuts, fruit, and chocolate. Being swedes coffee is another important thing for us. Another important thing when touring Europe is to always buy several bottles of water or even add that to your rider. If you drink tap water in another country you could become sick and probably have to cancel shows.
4. BACKUPS
Backups for everything. Always have a backup guitar, bass guitar, backup cables, extra tubes for amps, backup skins, cymbals and other spare parts for drums. It’s also good to bring your own monitor speaker, if you play a smaller punk venue, they might not have their own monitors and you do not want to make one show blow out your voice.
5. PLANNING
Probably the most important thing. The drive from city to city usually takes longer than expected with traffic and smoking and eating breaks. Our standard is to plan that it takes 2-3 hours more than what the GPS tells us. If you have internet you can also check Google Maps to see which roads are the best and have the least traffic, sometimes it can be beneficial to take a country road than the highway. If you’re lucky you might get to experience some beautiful nature at the same time.
