The craziest thing that we’ve experienced as a band was a total lack of any serious conflict, there wasn’t any of the divisive thinking or acting you hear about so often that have the tendency to cripple bands on the road. A lot of people chalk it up to “oh we just don’t get along” or “you can’t spend that much time in those close quarters with anybody without fighting or having some kind of disagreement,” but we know that to be bullshit based on our experiences on the road.
I attribute the success of the tour, and our mental and emotional well-being on the road as the result of a collective consciousness. We won’t talk much about it when asked, but we really hit our stride as a survival unit and musical ensemble after we saw the mystery lights in the desert. That’s when the shared dreaming and collective waking state dissociation started. I shouldn’t say any more than that, but we were able to apply new knowledge of ourselves in a pragmatic way to our behavior and conduct both on and off stage, and it payed off handsomely for us.
That tour was remarkably positive and uplifting for us. After a few dates and drives in the desert our separate wants and needs just fell into a perfect rhythm with one another. We acted more in alignment with a singular vision than any group I’ve ever worked with in the past. It felt great to be out there for such a long haul.
I would blame the struggles that other bands experience while touring on a disjointed or divergent thinking on a spiritual level. It’s a misalignment that has nothing to do with where you stop for gas or lunch, or who gets to use the van to fuck a bartender after the show, or whatever.
If you want something a little easier to digest, it was pretty fucking crazy when Miley Cyrus and Wayne Coyne showed up while we were playing in Tulsa. That was our favorite night of the last tour. It was my birthday so I dragged everybody all over town looking for a veal parm grinder, the apex of the upper echelon of sandwiches. We found a place that had them and ate dinner together, then went back and played a killer set. Towards the end Wayne and Miley walk in and the place just fucking exploded with half-naked-glitter-covered-turbo-drug-fueled-twenty-somethings, and I’m pretty sure everybody got laid. Also we got the best picture of Beardy Joe, our bassist, ever. Ill send it to you its a trip.
