Pre-show Rituals eh? This one is tough because I’m not superstitious and each band member does their own thing to get in the zone. Usually, we tell each other to have a good show and then we just do our thing on stage. I personally like to take a shot of whiskey before I sing. I also make sure I stretch so I don’t hurt myself when I’m climbing all over the place during our set. But sometimes I admit I forget to always limber up! Same goes with my voice. Most of the time to take a moment out to warm up in the bathroom or in a stairwell, but not every show am I on my game. In a perfect world, I would have a couple hours to chill out backstage, do my make-up and my warm-ups. I find when doing my own make-up it really relaxes me.
As an indie band, we don’t have any stage techs or a merch person, so half the time I’m running around setting up backdrops or selling merch. Sometimes we’re lucky and we get a green room, other times we don’t and I end up changing where ever I can find a corner.
Our drummer Andy is usually always on point when it comes to doing warm-ups. He always has his earbuds in, hammering away on his practice pad. We do have a post-show ritual though, and that is to not to talk about the performance until the next day or next rehearsal. We are a band that always wants to improve. If we make little mistakes, or have some constructive criticism for the other members instead of dwelling on it the night of, we always wait until we’re sober and ready to work out the kinks before we start the discussion. I feel it keeps the band really healthy.
