I was on a house concert tour (occasionally playing pubs in between homes) last year with my best friend and we had just left a show in Windsor, CA. Both of us were pretty hungry and wiped out so we stopped at an all-day breakfast joint for pancakes and coffee. Somebody happened to be there who recognized me from “The Voice” and he came up to say hello. He let me know that he was a big fan, asked some questions about my experience and about what I was up to now. I told him I was heading out towards Salem Oregon for a show the following day. He told me he was on his way to Portland but wasn’t in any hurry, and that he’d love to come check it out. The guy seemed friendly enough so I let him know where I’d be playing.
Flash forward to the next day and sure enough, he’s there. I finish my set at this pub and my buddy and I are mingling and having some drinks. The guy comes up to me and asks more questions; this time about if I wanted to go get a drink with him elsewhere and where I was planning on staying. At this point, I’m starting to pick up some weird vibes (he’s standing too close, and he’s breathing too heavily) so I decide to shake his hand, thank him for coming and tell him I need to start packing stuff up…even though I wasn’t really planning on leaving. It’s getting late now, and he finally says goodbye.
An hour and a half goes by and everyone has left besides me, my friend and the bar owners who we’ve been talking to most of the night. I get up to go to the bathroom and notice a lone car sitting in the parking lot through the window. It’s heavy breather guy. Now I’m pretty uncomfortable (probably from watching too many Dateline Mysteries). I went and told my friend and the bar owners and they were all equally creeped out by the situation. One of the owners (a BIG ass gentleman who I learned was a bouncer in his younger days) went out to the parking lot and told the man that he needed to leave the premises as the bar was now closed. According to the owner, the guy gave him a long creepy stare with a “Mona Lisa” like smile, rolled up his window and drove off without saying a word. My buddy and I hung out for another half hour or so before going to my car and heading out. I thankfully haven’t seen the guy since, but it was one of the strangest/creepiest interactions I’ve ever had with another human.
