Chicago has a very unique and awesome underground punk scene. Red Scare Industries is a big part of the reason why it is so great. Tobias of Red Scare books a lot of the local punk shows and has some awesome connections with some pretty sweet bands. On Friday, I made my way down to the Underground Lounge for the Copyrights, Brendan Kelly, and Costanza show. Needless to say it was a fun time.
I walked into the Underground Lounge, which by the way, is actually underground and entered a decent sized room with a bar and a low to the ground stage. This makes for a good environment for an intimate show. The bar was packed and it was kind of ridiculous because it was almost impossible to get a drink. But anyway, Costanza was the first band of the three. I had never heard them previously so I did not really know what to expect. They seemed like pretty cool laid back guys and actually made some good music as well. When they went on the place was pretty much as full as my belly after all you can eat wings. They were a great way to start the night.
Brendan Kelly then took the stage and as a fan whom has seen him previously, he had the same witty swag that he usually carries. Brendan is definitely a performer. He immediately gets the crowd going with some dick jokes of sort. It is very amusing to just hear him because of his drunken demeanor and jokes. Pretty much everyone there new the majority of his music because anyone out at a Brendan Kelly show must be a Lawrence Arms fan, right? I think so at least. Well tonight was special for Brendan because his brother and father had made it out to the show. So I think that had Brendan in a very good mood, thus producing a very good set.
After Brendan came the Red Scare band The Copyrights, whom I had heard a few times before while searching the web. Again, I did not know what to expect. These guys ended up being pretty awesome and entertaining. There entire set was full of such positive energy that it was a feel good time. This was a group of guys who were true to their punk rock roots and their live performance definitely showcased it. Overall, they were a great band that any punk fan would be proud of.
