One tip I have for being on tour is that you should explore the area you’re performing in. There is so much to do even in the smaller towns. Go see a landmark, or try foods that that specific area is known for. It not only give you new experiences, but it’s also great to learn about different cultures whether it be a different region in your own country or a whole new continent altogether.
Being on tour is incredibly fun yet also one of the most weirdly challenging experiences. From not knowing when your next shower is to struggling to find a break from socializing, I completely feel your pain. As an introvert, my solution to the latter problem is making sure I have noise canceling headphones and sunglasses on the road. People really get the message that you are not to be bothered with that handy combo. A bonus is that it makes you look important/cool even though you are just exhausted… I don’t have a solution for the shower problem though so good luck not smelling horrible!
Conserve your voice! Before touring, I’d used to perform with the mentality “leave it all on the stage”. But once you start performing every night, it becomes a lot more important to be able to maintain yourself from show to show. You perform a little different when you know you have to bring the same energy again tomorrow. What sounds great one night might not be realistic to sing 5-6 times a week.
Enjoy it! When you start touring on your own, there is a lot more behind the scenes work you might not have realized become a part of the job. It’s easy to get caught up in everything else and forget what got you to this point in the first place. Remember that not everyone gets to tour and do this for a living, so enjoy the music and moments on stage!
Log all the places and venues you have been to and keep a journal with you. Everything becomes a blur as time goes by and being on tour has so many great moments you don’t want to forget!
