The Royal Foundry - CRAZY TOUR STORIES
Join us as The Royal Foundry reveals one of their crazy stories from touring.
In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the indie alternative duo, The Royal Foundry, shares one of their stories from being on the road. You can check out the story below:
A few tours ago, in a land called Canada we decided it would be a good idea to drive from Toronto to Edmonton (33 hours) in one haul. We would all take turns driving while the other bandmates slept. Seemed like a good idea, we would save on hotels and we would all be home in our own beds in 33 hours.
It started out great, I drove through the USA for the faster speed limits and plentiful fast food options. When we made it to Chicago we got a massive deep dish pizza from Lou Malnatti's to sustain us on our drive. After devouring basically a solid block of cheese (disguised as a pizza) we carried on our journey.
By the time we hit North Dakota it was time to switch drivers, but my bandmates unbeknownst to me lacked the ability to drive through the night. So I took one for the team, taped my eyelids open, cracked open the windows, blared some Creed and carried on.
22 hours into the drive, a brick of cheese in my stomach, I got my first speeding ticket.
24 hours into the drive, jittery from caffeine, I got my second speeding ticket.
25 hours into the drive, lack of sleep, I got pulled over a third time. The cop was gracious enough to let me off with a warning.
The sun had come up and my bandmates took over the driving duties. We made it home safely, but felt absolutely terrible by the time we got home. I think I slept for 24 hours straight. Didn't save any money on hotels due to the tickets and felt like garbage from devouring more fast food, deep dish and energy drinks than any one person should ever consume.
The moral of the story is, don't drive through the night you're basically impaired when you're sleep deprived. Have we learned the moral of the story, no. We did it probably 3 more times before we finally did. But...now we avoid driving through the night at all costs...except when we have to.
