I’ve always wanted to travel to Japan. I love the culture, the art, the food, think my dream tour would for sure take place in Japan. I think it’s pretty awesome how pop-music and western culture is exported and adopted and loved by those around the world.
I think it would be a really amazing and energizing feeling having a non-English audience feel a connection to your music and sing the words back to you. Love how the power of music and art transcends languages and cultures…I think that would be the most amazing feeling I could have as an artist.
My dream tour would obviously be an over the top arena tour and would feature a powerhouse line-up of my childhood heroes. Would have loved to be touring with INXS surrounding the release of their “Kick” album in 1987. In terms of pop, it’s one of my all time favorites for sure. Massive drum sounds, Michael Hutchence’s sexy swagger, horns, a ton of radio hits and mixed by Bob Clearmountain?…man, what else could you ask for? Soooo good.
Michael Hutchence is also one of my frontman heroes so I think having the chance to tour with him would have been amazing. Was and still is very much an inspiration for me. He just had such charisma in everything he did. He oozed it. He was like a modern day Mick Jagger meets David Bowie to me. Watching old footage of INXS playing those legendary sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium is something I still do regularly, it fires me up and inspires me.
And if touring with the ghost of Michael Hutchence is too morbid of an answer than I’d probably have to say a tour to support Depeche Mode circa “Violator” in 1990 or U2 during the Acting Baby years circa 1991. All three bands at the time were huge, doing such really amazing things musically and when you really listen to how good those records were, what they were doing with samples, loops, how they got those amazing sounds…all to tape.
Think there’s just an authenticity from these bands, those specific records and for me, they really shaped who I am as an artist and how I express myself musically. Whenever I’m in the studio or working on a new song I literally reference those three bands and albums in how I express myself. It’s a specific musician language, I’m always saying things like, “think this part needs a really cool “Edge” type guitar part or some pure Eno/Lanois vibes …or like… think this song needs a massive INXS “Kick” / Bob Clearmoutain drum sound and immediately my producer knows what I’m saying. Think those records influenced so many people and communicating like that in terms of the referencing a specific band, player or producer is really common for a lot of artists. Their impact and legacy are undeniable so it’s always an easy way for me to give direction or communicate an idea or vibe I’m feeling.
In my head, these bands and albums are a benchmark of what cool is. Think the supporting tours for all three of these albums would have been larger than life.
