As musicians with over 15+ years of experience performing and touring with various bands, we've learned a thing or two about making life on the road more manageable. Here are some tips to help streamline your touring experience:
1. Stay Organized: Touring often means tight spaces, regardless of your level of success. Keeping your area clean and organized not only helps you find things quickly but also reduces stress and keeps your bandmates happy. Pack only what you need, preferably in smaller, travel-sized units, to avoid overpacking or underpacking.
2. Budget Wisely: Map out your expenses for gas, food, and other unexpected costs before hitting the road. Keeping a tight lid on your finances is crucial for minimizing stress and making the most of your tours. Manage your merchandise and show money diligently, and always have an emergency fund, such as a credit card or backup cash, for unexpected expenses like flat tires or maintenance issues.
3. Take Care of Your Health: Prioritize your health while on tour. One sick band member can lead to misery for everyone. Stock up on hand sanitizer, daily vitamin C chews, and plenty of water to stay healthy and energized throughout the tour.
4. Promote Your Shows: Spread the word about your shows through targeted ads, local plugs on podcasts or radio stations, and social media. People can't attend if they don't know about it, so make sure to promote your performances to likely attendees.
5. Don't Be That Guy: Avoid being annoying or difficult to be around. Spending every day with the same group of people can become tiresome, so take breaks from each other and show baseline respect to your bandmates and others. This helps avoid unnecessary conflicts and makes the tour more enjoyable for everyone.
6. Be a Quality Human: Lastly, be friendly, approachable, and personable with everyone you meet. Building meaningful relationships across the country or the world is vital for networking and future opportunities. Being genuinely nice makes networking much easier and enriches your touring experience.
By following these tips, you can make your touring experience smoother, more enjoyable, and ultimately more successful. Cheers!
