My first concert experience was seeing Pantera live in Brisbane, Australia in 2001. I was working in a music store at the time, and Dimebag had come in to look around. I helped him with something and he was a very nice person. I feel lucky to have briefly met him. A band from Brisbane, Powderfinger, opened for them which wasn’t a good fit. Powderfinger was a grunge/alternative type band and when the singer came out and started doing his best Eddie Vedder impersonation, he was bombarded with water bottles. I felt bad for them. I think today’s’ music listeners would be way more open minded and actually welcome the diversity of those two acts on the same bill. Pantera was awesome. at one point during the show, Phil came out with a cart of beers in those red cups and proceeded to spiral them out into the audience. This went on for a good 10 minutes or so, people madly trying to grab the cups as they went flying into the crowd, believing that when they caught the beers there would actually be some beer left in the cup. It was fun to watch though. Musically, Pantera was crushing in a really musical way. They are just such great songwriters and deliver with such commitment. Seeing that performance where an act was at once professional yet loose in their interactions, just really resonated. It made me think that you can do it all, be a killer world class band and also be yourself in the delivery of that.

Keep up with the band on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
