This past Sunday, we had a night full of mixed emotions while seeing one of our favorite bands, Underoath, play their final Chicago show. The Farewell Tour featured performances from mewithoutYou, As Cities Burn and Letlive. You can check out our review after the break.
The much anticipated Underoath Farewell Tour hit Chicago on January 20, 2013 and it was definitely a show to remember. I had arrived to an already formed line outside the entrance to The Metro filled with fans in their Underoath shirts and hoodies ready to see the band for one final time.
The show opened up with the band, Letlive. They were quite an energetic band and definitely kicked off the show with a huge rush of energy. This was my first time ever seeing Letlive and their energy on stage really impressed me. Their vocalist had the stage covered the entire set while he ran back and forth and was quite entertaining to watch. While the singer was doing his thing, I also couldn’t stop watching the bassist groove immensely to all their songs. They had kept the crowd alive with them the entire set as I watched kids mosh against each other and form circle pits on the vocalist’s command. I was unfamiliar with Letlive before the show, but after watching their entertaining and energetic set live, it made me want to pick up a record.
Next up, As Cities Burn took the stage. Once they came on, I had noticed that they had their original vocalist with them as well and got more excited to see them. They had played a few songs off their record, “Son I Loved You At Your Darkest”, including “Bloodsucker pt. II”. As Cities Burn definitely kept the energy rolling with their set. I observed as many kids were moshing and singing along to the words that they knew. If you have never seen/heard As Cities Burn, they are, in my opinion, definitely a band to catch at least once.
While As Cities Burn tore down their gear, next up was mewithoutYou. I really enjoyed watching this band live, they had a lot of emotion in all of their songs that I could feel. Their set was like riding a roller coaster; they started off with a bang with a high energy song, then would bring it down to a more mellow jam, then bring it right back up as soon as they were done. I also saw that their vocalist had many different instruments up there with him as he was singing and at one point he brought out an accordion, which I thought was pretty cool. After seeing them on this tour, I would definitely love to see them again in the near future.
Finally, it was the band that everyone had been waiting for all night, Underoath. Across the stage, they had four light posts with strobes attached to the top, and behind the drum riser, they had a blank white backdrop that was used for projections. Everyone was antsy and the “Underoath” chants began to roar in the building. The backdrop would randomly flash the infamous Underoath logo and roll a montage as the band took the stage to a sold out, screaming crowd. They had opened up with “Breathing In A New Mentality” and the entire place just went ballistic. They had played some old fan favorites, such as “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door”, “Reinventing Your Exit”, and “A Boy Brushed Red Living In Black and White”. While they played those songs, you could barely even hear Spencer singing, as the crowd took his voice over with theirs. Their energy was phenomenal and knew how to keep it going throughout the entire set. This was the third time I had seen Underoath live and each time I see them, they just keep on getting better and better, and bring it even harder than the last time.
Overall, the entire show was a major success and the bands on this tour couldn’t complement each other any better. It was a very nostalgic experience seeing two bands I had listened to growing up live again, as well as discovering two other bands. I also consider myself lucky to be able to see Underoath on their Farewell Tour and hopefully will be to see them on a reunion tour if planned!
