So I must have been about 16 years old at the time and my brother, Simon, had bought tickets for us to go to my first concert. When looking online he was stuck between two artists - J Cole or John Legend. Knowing how much time I spent singing, he chose John. Simon had been constantly pushing me to take music seriously and I think this was a way to show me what it could look like. Up until this point i had only played a few gigs in local venues. The show was in the o2 arena in my home town Newcastle, and of course it was sold out.
I remember watching John legend descend from the top of the stage while playing a grand piano and singing ‘ordinary people’ which was one of my favourite songs at the time. I was in awe for the whole night. From the singing, to the dancers and backing vocalists, everything was on point. I distinctly remember his closing song ‘all of me’ And the wave noise coming from the crowd as everyone sang it back word for word, i think something clicked for me then. Becoming an artist felt less like a pipe dream after going to my first concert.
