1. Charge your phone before leaving for the airport/that long drive.
Bring a portable charger and adapters for foreign countries. Don’t want to be that guy or girl always trying to bum a charge!
2. Having the right luggage is essential.
Compartments, zippers, places for essential documents in a compact format. Staying organized is the first step to a sane mind on tour, I’ve found. I’ve lost plenty of things on the road (band mates will attest to this) but, luckily, have gotten most of them back. This is an easily avoidable inconvenience if you have your packing system together (shout out to Jacob Silver, bassist extraordinaire & second-hand luggage broker).
3. Bring portable, healthy food.
Everyone knows- food on the go is not normally edible. At least if you’re interested in keeping a somewhat healthy diet. I stock up on lean protein bars (grooving on Epic bars at the moment), nuts and dried fruit. Grueling travel hours are taxing enough. No need to add to it with a poor diet. Just takes a little planning to feel that much better.
4. Exercise. Or sleep.
Exercise on tour is obviously the best choice for that hour or two before soundcheck. But sometimes you’re too beat to stagger down to the hotel gym. Recognize when it’s best to catch a nap vs. putting your body through a workout. Alternatively, recognize when you gotta get off the bed and hit the gym!
5. Enjoy yourself.
Realize when the nights-to-remember are happening on tour and be a part of them. I try to regiment myself with good diet and rest, but once in a while you gotta hang with the fellas and enjoy the moment. Take pictures. You’ll regret not doing so, even if you spend 250 days/year on tour and think taking photos are lame, take them. See the world. Then do it all again in two weeks.
