We’re No Heroes – CRAZY TOUR STORIES

In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the indie band, We’re No Heroes, talk about some of their crazy moments from touring. You can check out the feature, after the break.

We’re No Heroes live shows may seem to get a little conflagrant at times but we’re quite the laid back bunch off stage. That’s not to say however that we don’t run into our fair share of ruckus & rumpus when on the road. Some stories are best left unsaid but one of our favorite tour tales to tell is when we made the headlines of a local newspaper in Oakham while passing through for breakfast after a date in Manchester.
We convinced them we were there to film a skate movie called ‘Ride or Die’. You can probably find the video on youtube somewhere still. We had our good friend with us, Josh Whitton who’s an avid skateboarder and our merch/hype man. It became an inside joke that in every city and town we stopped in we had to each film a skate video and shout out ‘Ride or Die’. It soon got out of hand. I remember Dewey was last to film one in Bath. He tried to jump down a flight of steps and into a road. He had a quite a bit to drink too. Somehow he made it through, but not without a big wobble and an almost fatal collision. The Problem with it all was that none of us could skate apart from Josh & so the short films would end with us falling over and hurting ourselves.
It’s not the worse injury sustained on tour though. Again, in Bath, we’d just finished at the show in Moles, an incredible venue with a lot of historical significance in the music world. If you’ve been there you know the stage is downstairs in an old dank dungeon. It’s great but the ceiling is pretty low. It was time to load our equipment out onto the mini bus. We’d pretty much got everything we needed on board except the bag full of heavy drum hardware and stands. I ran back in, we were in a little bit of a rush to get to bed as it was late and we had to be in London the next day. Tired & sweaty from the show I decided to run dragging the bag toward the exit. In the dark, however, I couldn’t see the corner of a low ceiling and ran full speed head first into the sharp edge and bounced off knocking myself out. 15 minutes passed and the rest of the band and crew were wondering where I was. When they entered I was being propped up by a bouncer who was also the first aider. He advised I visit the hospital as soon as possible since there was a gash in my head and my hair was red with blood. I decided to go on with the tour and walk it off. I still have a dent in the top of my head to this day and as I write this I’m rubbing it in memory of that dull ache. I should have probably gone to the hospital.
Dewey nearly pissed his pants once. We were on the motorway up north of England and as you do when you’re on the road you load your bus up with the free alcohol you get on your rider. Dewey was on a mission to get through as much of it as possible. We had a surplus this time around. The problem was there seemed to be nowhere to stop when he needed to relieve himself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so red in the face and desperate to go. He recounts the pain to me when I mentioned I was going to tell this story. The punch line is we turned the music we were playing off and found some sounds of a flowing river on Spotify called ‘Babbling Brook’ and then proceeded to play it as loud as we could. You can imagine the effect this had on the poor boy. Since then if you mention you need to take a slash on our tour someone will play ‘Babbling Brook’. You best just keep it to yourself if you can.
