3:00 pm, somewhere in Middle America. I open my eyes and wake up in my tour bus bunk bed, awoken by the sound of laughter and a guitar outside. We’re on our first world tour, opening up for some of our biggest heroes. We’re about two months in, and really starting to get into the swing of things.
I roll out of bed and step out into the bus area, where Neil Young has the group hanging off of his every word, telling Julien a story about the good old days. I smile to myself and continue through the bus into the next room. Willie is there with a guitar, singing another one of his dirty country songs. Andy and some of the guys are singing along. The acoustic guitar, amongst other things, is being passed around. I indulge. As I walk past the bathroom, Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are in some sort of a heated argument. Suddenly, they start making out and pull out a little bag out of their pocket. I do not indulge. We’ve learned to love their antics. Further on in the bus, Devan is leading a singalong with the Lumineers. They’re working on a new song for us to all sing at the end of the show. I make a suggestion – “That chorus you’re singing? It’s actually a verse.” Their minds are totally blown.
There’s great energy on the bus and everyone’s getting excited for the show. Tonight we’re in Denver at Red Rocks Amphitheater, and we’ve got Brandi Carlile and Chris Stapleton flying in to perform; it ought to be a doozie.
We play the show and it’s everything we could imagine. Everybody takes the stage together for the last song, and we all sing with “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” by The Band. Paul McCartney is at the after-party bonding with Maggie Rogers over their love for Carole King. Sir Paul gets on the piano and the whole room sings “Natural Woman”. David Crosby passes out in the bathtub. Another great night on the road. Back on the bus until tomorrow.
