1. V8 and Gaff Tape.
This is really two rules. One: eat healthy to stay healthy. A little pricier hearty and healthy meal will get you a lot farther than dollar burgers at Mickey D’s. Two: Be prepared. Have every tool and toy you need to keep your gear and show running smoothly on hand. Gaff tape can damn near fix any bind your in at a show until you can figure out a better solution off stage.
2. Stay hydrated. A stop to pee is always free.
Staying hydrated during long trips will keep you from getting stiff and road weary. Don’t worry about making extra stops, getting on your feet more often will also keep you loose and limber to rock out later that night.
3. Red Roof Inn for the Win.
You’re inevitably going to play in a city where you don’t have a friend or family members place to crash. Staying at a hotel doesn’t have to be a four star treatment. You can find rooms for around $50 a night. Look outside city lines for better prices.
4. Love it and live it.
On the road you’re going to be trapped in a van with the same people for hours. You should make sure that you love being around those people, it’ll make it much more pleasant. Also, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. Some of our fondest tour memories are cliff jumping in Newport, RI and swimming in the James River in Richmond, VA. You’re being afforded an amazing opportunity to experience tons of cool places, make sure to take it all in.
5. Safety First, then Teamwork.
James Franco got it right. Be safe and use your head. Remember there’s a job to be done. You’re on the road to promote your band and put on an amazing show. Don’t sacrifice that with bad decisions, there’s a time and place for those. Work together to get everything done as efficiently as possible. That’ll give you more time to experience the parts of tour you’ll never forget.
