Touring is always an interesting one for us, our fans are all really passionate and go to some pretty extreme lengths to see us – traveling from all over Europe to our UK shows alone is a common occurrence.
This one time we were playing Glasgow, Scotland, to a particularly wild crowd with Nothing But Thieves as part of the UK run we both did. There’s something about Glasgow, every time we play there makes for a memorable experience. The night started off like any other – some pre-show drinks with the Thieves guys in the dressing rooms, the usual backstage antics, and an electric show to a sold out crowd (I think it was the Garage). After the show we’re meeting the fans, doing photos and signing stuff, when the security throw everyone out, us included, so we take the fans out to some local clubs on the strip. This is where things start to change. It was an electric night in Glasgow, the streets were shoulder to shoulder, pretty much a street party everywhere you looked. Things got wild and we all separated throughout the early hours, often passing each other in different clubs, or seeing one of the crew involved in a crazy sight in the distance up the street. I eventually headed back to the tour bus around 4am, just started to chill out when my phone rings. Will is in hospital, without his wallet, and I need to meet him at about 5am to pay a taxi fare so he can get back to the bus. At some point in the night, the fans that Will was with jumped on his back while he was making a call. Next thing he knows he’s waking up on the floor, he can faintly hear screams through his ringing ears, can barely move, and there’s blood everywhere. Someone picks him up and gets him in an ambulance, he doesn’t remember much of what happened. He had a pretty good concussion, a hell of a black eye, and we think one of the fans broke their arm. He spent the rest of his night (and the next morning) in hospital.
A bonus Glasgow story (didn’t I say Glasgow is always eventful). We get back to the tour bus after a show, and a we find a fan hiding out IN the bus. They weren’t hiding too well, our tour manager nearly had a heart attack when he found them. They were apologetic but excited. We had some drinks and photos with them and hung out for a bit before we had to leave. We’re not sure whether they planned on coming to the next city with us, or jumping out on us…but we had fun so it was all good.
